As you know, over the past three years we have grown as a community. Indeed this growth is most clearly seen among our families with younger children. I made a commitment when I arrived at Saint Ignatius make sure that families and children of all ages were welcome here, especially at our liturgies.
I also made a commitment to work with you to re-open our Sunday school and begin a program of Christian Formation for our children. This we did in the fall of 2008 thanks to the help and support of Lucy Yates. Due to a number of factors, we have not always been able to make that program as consistent as we would have liked and we are now redoubling our efforts for 2010-2011.
In order to do this work most effectively, I have gathered a Family Ministry Committee to provide both leadership and wise council. On the committee are Churchwarden Laura Friedman, Mrs Carol Farris, Professor Rachel McDermott, Mr James Tunkey, Ms Lucy Yates, and myself. We have begun to meet to formulate plans for next year’s Sunday School, as well as work together on other family ministry initiatives including family events, service opportunities, programs for our older children and teens, and an acolyte guild. Our committee members are dedicated to this work and most enthusiastic.
Over the next few months we will keep you abreast of all our plans, including that to refurbish the old Sunday School Room over the Summer. In the meanwhile, I want to encourage all our families and children and teens to make a special effort to come to our single service on Whitsunday: The Day of Pentecost, 23 May 2010 at 10 a.m. We will be celebrating the baptism of two of our children, as well as that of a parent! I hope all the children will be able to be present to support their friends as they become their new brothers and sisters in Christ. Perhaps after the service, a group might set out to the Hippo Playground in Riverside Park to continue the festivities?
